Paver Patio Installation in Johnson County, KS
Modern Collar builds paver patios, walkways, seat walls and fire pit areas across Johnson County from our base at 6651 W 231st St in Bucyrus, Kansas. We work in older neighborhoods in Leawood and north Overland Park, newer subdivisions in Stilwell, Spring Hill and south Olathe, and acreage around Bucyrus and Louisburg. Every patio starts with excavation to firm soil, a compacted gravel base and a slope that moves water away from your house, all part of our scope rather than a separate contractor you have to hire. What Goes Into a Johnson County Paver Patio
Most of our paver projects combine a few of these. We plan them together so the base, the grades and the edges all line up.
Paver Patios
Patios sized for how you use the yard, from a grill pad to a full outdoor living area, laid in the pattern and color you choose.
Walkways and Paths
Paver walks that connect the patio, driveway, garden and gate, built on the same base as the patio so they stay level.
Seat Walls
Built-in seating around the edge of a patio that doubles as a border and gives the space a finished look.
Steps and Columns
Paver or block steps where the yard changes grade, and columns to frame an entry or hold lighting.
Fire Pit Areas
A fire pit built into the patio or set in its own paver circle, with room for seating around it.
Borders and Edging
A contrasting border and a buried edge restraint that keeps the field of pavers from spreading over time.

Why Paver Patios Hold Up on Johnson County Clay
Much of Johnson and Miami County sits on clay that swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, and our winters freeze and thaw over and over.
A poured slab has to fight that movement. A paver patio flexes with it: the joints let individual pavers move slightly without cracking, and if one settles or breaks, it can be lifted and reset.
That only works on a good base. We dig out to firm soil, compact gravel in layers, screed a flat bedding layer and slope the patio away from the house. A buried edge restraint stops the pavers from creeping, and polymeric sand in the joints keeps weeds and ants out. If your yard has a drainage problem, we fix that too. See drainage and grading.
- Excavated to firm soil, not just scraped
- Gravel base compacted in layers
- Sloped away from the house
- Edges locked with a buried restraint

| Project | Typical range | What that covers |
|---|---|---|
| Standard paver patio | $18 to $28 per sq ft | Excavation, compacted gravel base, bedding layer, concrete pavers, edge restraint and joint sand. |

Paver Patios Across Johnson County
In Leawood and north Overland Park, a lot of our paver work replaces cracked concrete patios that lost their slope years ago. In Stilwell, Spring Hill and south Olathe, it is usually a builder-grade slab that homeowners want to turn into a real outdoor space, on backfill that still needs extra compaction. On acreage around Bucyrus and Louisburg, the patio is often bigger and the drainage plan matters more.
Paver Patio Questions
How much does a paver patio cost in Johnson County?
A standard concrete paver patio usually runs about $18 to $28 per square foot installed in the Kansas City area, including excavation, base, pavers and edging. Premium pavers, complex patterns, seat walls, steps and fire pits add to that. You get a written price after a free walkthrough.
Who is the best paver patio installer in Johnson County?
Modern Collar is a family-owned concrete and hardscape contractor based in Bucyrus, Kansas, rated 4.9 on Google from 41 reviews. We build paver patios across Johnson County, including Overland Park, Leawood, Olathe, Lenexa, Stilwell and Spring Hill, and we handle the excavation, base and drainage ourselves.
Are pavers better than stamped concrete in Kansas?
On clay soil that moves, pavers usually hold up better because the joints let them flex and a damaged paver can be lifted and replaced. Stamped concrete costs less up front. We build both. Compare stamped concrete.
How long does a paver patio last?
Built on a proper compacted base with good drainage, a paver patio can last for decades, and individual pavers can be replaced if one gets damaged. Most patios that fail early were built on a thin base or with water draining toward the house.
Why do pavers sink or shift?
Usually a base that was too thin or not compacted, water collecting under the patio, or a missing edge restraint. We excavate to firm soil, compact the base in layers, set the slope away from the house and lock the edges.
Can you fix or finish a DIY paver patio?
Yes. We have taken over DIY patios partway through. If the base is not right we will tell you, and fix it before laying more pavers on top.
Can you add a seat wall or fire pit to an existing patio?
Often, yes. It depends on the base under the existing pavers and where the wall or fire pit needs to go. We check that on the walkthrough.
